You wish you could erase it from your memory.
The pictures and memories keep popping into your mind at random times, leaving feelings of shame, guilt, fear, and loss.
You can’t escape the thoughts, and the anxiety about when the next idea will come keeps you on edge all the time.
Why aren’t you over this already?
It happened in childhood, which was a long, long time ago.
Memories from childhood still bring up strong feelings and influence behaviors today, even though you’ve worked hard to respond differently.
No matter how much you’ve tried, the triggers still pop up and set you off, leaving others around you to wonder what led to the emotional outburst, or why you have retreated and disconnected.
The cycle of self-defeat keeps you stuck.
Being stuck keeps you from reaching your goals and finding happiness.
Cravings, compulsions, and other self-defeating behaviors keep setting you back, despite a genuine desire to leave those behaviors behind you. They bubble up in your mind and seem to take over.
The voice in your head that keeps telling you to “do the thing” is so loud that it is impossible to ignore.
It would be great to rewrite those memories and thoughts.
There is a way to create new positive thoughts and memories.
With Accelerated Resolution Therapy, clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, substance abuse, and other mental health conditions begin experiencing memories and images in a new way so that they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy is an emerging psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies, including EMDR, but is shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (i.e., 1-5 sessions).
Relief can come very quickly, even when processing long-standing or significant problems.
What is it like to do this therapy?
While sitting across from me, I’ll have you move your eyes side-to-side as I guide you through a series of visualizations about the problem you want to address.
We’ll move from seeing the negative images to creating positive images and use the eye movements to process the bodily sensations that arise during the experience.
At the end of the session, most people feel relaxed and relieved. The positive visualizations are strong and long-lasting, and the triggers cease to elicit a negative response. The facts of the events that occurred remain, but the thoughts and feelings about them are different and more manageable.
The thoughts and memories are “unhooked” from the emotional response, giving you time to respond, rather than react.
You don’t have to talk about your trauma.
If shame, embarrassment, guilt, or fear about telling your trauma story keeps you from getting help, this is a good therapy to try. ART focuses on visualizations; you don’t need to recount any information about the event or issue you are processing.
I can help you frame your visualizations without knowing what they are, and you can choose how little or how much you care to share about the details throughout the process.
I have done Accelerated Resolution Therapy sessions with clients who shared nothing, and I had no idea what they were processing. Yet, they felt measurable relief at the end of the session.
It’s versatile.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy can be used as a short-term intervention for a session or two or incorporated into a talk therapy course.
If the goal is to release a traumatic memory, that may be just a single session.
For issues that require more behavior change, Accelerated Resolution Therapy can quickly reprocess core beliefs, identify negative thought patterns, and encourage positive behavior changes. It can also be included as part of a CBT-based talk therapy approach.
